The International Canoe Federation has selected Lake Lanier Olympic Park in Gainesville, Georgia as the host of the 2018 ICF Dragon Boat World Championships. This honor brings with it many exciting activities and opportunities. The local community in Gainesville-Hall County is ready for the challenge of once again hosting the world. Previous events have been held in Europe and Asia. This will be the first time the event is held on an American continent.
The Dragon Boat World Championships will bring together athletes from over 25 countries for four days of intense competition, fellowship and fun. Lake Lanier Olympic Park is the perfect setting for this event with its pristine racing conditions on the Upper Chattahoochee River and venue complete with Olympic Timing Tower and grandstands.
2018 Dragon Boat World Championship’s local organizing committee has been formed and they have begun planning the event which will take place September 12-16, 2018. Plans are underway for a spectacular opening ceremony, state of the art race course and timing, events and entertainment for fans and athletes and of course plenty of Southern hospitality.
Members of our local organizing committee will be attending the 2017 ICF Dragon Boat Club World Championships in Venice, Italy the week of September 3-8th. They expect to learn a great deal from the ICF officials and event organizers. If you are planning on attending the Venice event, be on the lookout for our team. We will have lots of Lake Lanier swag and would love to share some goodies with you.
